About Me
Over the last
ten years as a middle and high school Language Arts teacher, I
have also worked
in K-12 instruction, curriculum, and assessment,
specializing in middle grades education and classroom
data. I am a successful classroom teacher,
well-received professional developer, and policy
consultant for the Center for Teaching Quality. In
addition to a number of teaching honors, in 2003 I
received ASCD’s international Outstanding Young Educator
Award and later joined the organization's governance as
an elected member-at-large of the Leadership Council.
I have worked all over the nation as a professional
developer and presenter on topics including assessment,
classroom data, reading and writing with diverse
learners, school change and improvement, classroom
management, and teacher leadership. In 2006, I was
featured in the ASCD Best Practices in Action video and
DVD, Using Visualization to Enhance Background
Knowledge.
I have
written curriculum for teacher training with the North
Carolina Teacher Academy, and am very interested in the
writing and implementation of on-line professional
development courses, as well as web design for student,
teacher, and school support. Writing is one of my
specialties, and over the years, I have supported
writing of large-scale grants and reviews like the Broad
Prize for Urban Education, as well as writing and
implementing smaller-scale grants from Michael Jordan
Fundamentals and the NC Humanities Council. I have
written for publications like Teacher Magazine
and Classroom Leadership and contributed to
policy publications like Every Child Deserves Our Best:
Recommendations from North Carolina’s National Board
Certified Teachers on How to Support and Staff High
Needs Schools (National Education
Association and Center for Teaching Quality, 2006).
