Overview
Self-Portrait
1940
We
start the year off in English II: World Literature by
looking at the self-portraits of Frida Kahlo, a Mexican
artist internationally known for her use of cultural and
personal symbolism. By discussing students’ initial
responses to her work and life, we begin building a
new way of looking at ideas and lifestyles different
than our own – one that emphasizes curiosity and
openness, a vital perspective to develop in my
small-town, rural students.
Students examine a variety of texts: Kahlo's paintings,
biographical information, film, and award-winning poetry by Lucinda
Grey, a UNC-Charlotte professor and Kahlo scholar. While discussing and analyzing
the visual symbolism of Kahlo’s work, I work to help
students examine
the symbolism in their own lives and move toward writing
with depth and personal connection.
