Standardized
Testing
These
days, standardized testing is a mini-subject all on its
own, and though I am not a big believer, I understand
the importance of holding myself accountable to state
standards and I feel a moral obligation to help my
students and school jump the multiple testing hurdles
placed in the path to improvement. Because most
standardized tests are based on creating score spread
(Level 1 to Level 4), tests like the NC Reading EOG
often show more about a student's socio-economic
background and what he/she doesn't know, than what what
he/she does. There are many, very good reasons to
doubt the validity of students and school evaluations
based on tests like the EOG. But, they have become
a fact of life for my students, so while I continue to
fight the baseless acceptance of flawed tests, I do what
I can to make sure my students can be as successful as
possible.
I
spent ten years at Piedmont Open Middle in
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, a large urban district in
North Carolina where I taught all levels of eighth grade
Language Arts, and two at Mid-Carolina High School in
Newberry County, a much smaller rural district in South
Carolina, where I taught honors English 2 and regular
English 4.
