Senior Heraldry
To
start off the year in British Literature and get to know
each other, students created personal coats of arms
after reading about and studying the importance and
rules of ancient heraldic design. Let your cursor
rest on the thumbnail to see who created it, then click

Monster
Essays
To end
our unit on heroes and monsters, students in English 4
worked on an in-class essay about how the nature of
monsters has both changed and remained the same from
Anglo-Saxon England to present day America. The
goal was for students to use what they have learned
about writing to produce a better essay (according to
the SAT Scoring Rubric) than they wrote on a similar
prompt about heroes closer to the start of the unit.
The essay also forced them to go back though texts like
Beowulf and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to
gather evidence for their ideas. It was a rigorous
exercise and, despite initial protest, students took it
seriously, asking the kinds of questions real writers
ask as they craft their work. Here they are hard
at writing and looking all intellectual.
