Cherokee 2006
In
October, Piedmont's eighth graders traveled to Cherokee,
North Carolina, as part of our interdisciplinary unit,
Native Americans: Fact and Fiction. We
stopped at Kings Mountain National Military Park on the
way and while in Cherokee, explored both the Oconoluftee
Indian Village and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian.
Before returning home, students tried their luck panning
for gemstones and donated a 50% cut of their gemstone
profits to eighth grade Piedmont teachers - we wish.
Upon returning, many students participated in court
cases arguing whether it is right or wrong to use Native
American stereotypes to promote economic industries like
tourism and professional sports.
