Greetings!

I'm Jennifer Morrison, an educational consultant/writer and secondary English Language Arts teacher in the Carolinas.  This site is designed to assist my students, their families, colleagues, and clients with tools and important documents, but there is also a good deal here about me and my thoughts on education.

Please feel free to contact me at j.morrison@artofeducating.com if you have questions.

What's the latest?

Check out my latest article, "Why Teachers Must Be Data Experts," in the December 2008/January 2009 edition of Educational Leadership magazine.  You can find a digital copy on ASCD's website.

I finished up my twelfth year of teaching as Mid-Carolina's Teacher of the Year in June of 2009.  I have to say that the last two years as a high school English teacher were fabulous.  I learned a great deal about myself as an educator and about about teaching older secondary students in a small, rural (but progressive) district and working with colleagues in a place where teachers often end up teaching at the same school they attended as students.  It was an enlightening contrast from ten years in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, an urban district of 135,000 students.  I'm looking forward to maintaining and enriching the many friendships and professional connections I've made over the past two years.

While in Newberry, much of my leadership and professional development work has centered around improving teachers' classroom data and assessment literacy through inquiry and collaboration. Check out MCHS's data website which I designed and built to provide a foundation for faculty discussion and decision-making.

At the end of July, I will be presenting a week-long course in data and assessment I wrote and designed for teachers participating in Guilford County (NC) School's alternative certification program.  The eight intensive, half-day components of the course are Summative Assessment, Formative Assessment, Analysis of Test Results, Data Sharing, Giving Meaningful Feedback, Grading, Homework, and Taking Action from Data.  Feel free to contact me if you would like more information.

What's next?

I will start my PhD in Educational Administration at the University of South Carolina in the Fall of 2009.  Until then, I am writing and working on whatever comes up.

Do you have a need in your school or district?

I am available for on- and off-site professional development and consulting.  Please contact me via email if you would like to discuss a need or possible project.

As a consultant, I support research and data-informed instruction and assessment through workshops, materials development, and coaching.  I can work with teachers, school administrators, central office staff, and those involved in education at all levels to improve student performance with a focus on developing teacher quality and bettering the perception and experience of schooling.
